CK Nayudu's IPL Auction Value: Could India's First Test Captain Fetch ₹25 Crore?

CK Nayudu's IPL Auction Value: Could India's First Test Captain Fetch ₹25 Crore?

India's first Test captain CK Nayudu received modest allowances in 1932, but his explosive batting, all-round skills and popularity could have made him an IPL auction sensation worth ₹25 crore in the modern T20 era.

India's first Test captain, Colonel Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu, better known as CK Nayudu, could have commanded a record-breaking bid of ₹19.50 crore to ₹25 crore in an Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, considering his aggressive batting, all-round abilities and exceptional popularity.

Nayudu, who played India's first Test match in 1932, represented the country during an era when Indian cricketers received modest allowances for overseas tours. Historical documents indicate that players in the 1930s were paid approximately 10 shillings to one British pound per day during foreign tours.

In 1932, one British pound was valued at approximately ₹13.33. Based on this exchange rate, a player would have received around five pounds, equivalent to approximately ₹65 to ₹70, as an allowance during a five-day Test match.

After India's independence, official Test match fees were fixed at ₹250 in the 1950s. The amount increased to ₹400 in the 1960s and ranged from ₹500 to ₹2,500 during the 1970s.

Nayudu played only seven Test matches for India, scoring 350 runs at an average of 25.00. However, his reputation extended far beyond his Test statistics. He once hit a six measuring 140 metres, a feat that even some of the biggest Indian cricketing legends of the present and past have not achieved.

The historical allowances received by Indian cricketers in 1932 also offer an insight into how dramatically the financial landscape of cricket has changed.

To estimate the purchasing power of the approximately ₹65 to ₹100 received as a Test match allowance in 1932 in terms of Indian currency in 2026, the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) index and the gold price index provide a baseline.

In 1932, the average price of 10 grams of gold in India was approximately ₹18 to ₹20. In 2026, the market price of 10 grams of gold has risen to approximately ₹75,000 to ₹80,000.

This represents a historical increase of approximately 3,800 to 4,000 times.

Using an average allowance of ₹66.65 from 1932 and applying a benchmark multiplier of 3,900, the allowance for a Test match played during that period would be equivalent to approximately ₹2.50 lakh to ₹3.50 lakh today.

Including the purchasing power value of the entire five-day match and travel allowances, the amount would be equivalent to approximately ₹3.50 lakh to ₹4.50 lakh in present-day terms.

In comparison, current players receive ₹3 lakh per day for a Test match, amounting to ₹15 lakh for the entire match.

If CK Nayudu had been part of the modern T20 era and entered the IPL auction, his exceptional cricketing abilities, style and personality could have triggered an intense bidding battle among franchises.

Nayudu was renowned for his aggressive batting, a quality considered essential in modern T20 cricket.

In 1926, while playing against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at the Bombay Gymkhana, he scored a blistering 153 runs in just 116 minutes. His innings included 11 towering sixes.

His extraordinary power-hitting was also evident at the Chepauk ground in Madras, where he hit a six measuring more than 140 metres from a boundary located 50 yards away.

In Warwickshire, he reportedly sent a six over the stadium and across a river that separated two counties, further demonstrating his exceptional ability to clear the boundary.

As an all-rounder, Nayudu would have been a complete player for the T20 format. He could have played the role of a middle-order batter and finisher while also contributing with his accurate off-break and medium-pace bowling to take crucial wickets during the middle overs.

Indian spin all-rounders have consistently attracted strong demand in IPL auctions, making Nayudu's bowling abilities another important factor in determining his potential value.

His charismatic personality and widespread popularity among the public could also have helped franchises increase their brand value and sponsorship revenue.

Under the current IPL auction system, each team has a purse of approximately ₹120 crore.

In this era, top Indian all-rounders and captains such as Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Venkatesh Iyer attract bids ranging from ₹18 crore to ₹27 crore.

Considering CK Nayudu's aggressive batting, all-round ability to take wickets, availability as an Indian captain and unique brand value, his potential IPL auction price could have reached ₹19.50 crore to ₹25 crore.

The hypothetical valuation highlights the extraordinary financial transformation of Indian cricket, from the modest allowances received by its earliest international players to the multimillion-rupee contracts available in today's IPL.
